Middle School Math Teacher

Department: Middle School Faculty

Position Description

Columbus Academy seeks a full-time Middle School Math Teacher with responsibilities to begin in August 2025.

The individual selected for this position will be expected to carry out the following responsibilities:

  • Teach four to five sections that may include Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and/or Geometry. Higher level math courses are also often taught in our Upper School.
  • Serve as a grade-level advisor to roughly 10 students; prepared to learn and implement advisory curriculum
  • Assume a share of supervisory responsibilities expected of all middle school faculty members
  • Collaborate with grade level and departmental colleagues on curriculum design and development
  • Provide periodic updates to parents about student progress, via both written reports and in-person conferences
  • Make use of technological resources, including the school’s online learning management site for classes and integration of iPads and laptops in classroom activities
  • Hold students accountable for the Academy’s standards of behavior
  • Work with others in the school community to support each student’s emotional well-being

Qualifications

Preferred candidates will possess the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in mathematics or a closely related field
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience in middle school, preferably in mathematics
  • Passion for teaching middle school children
  • Enthusiasm for the study of math concepts
  • Knowledge of varied pedagogy and trends in mathematical instruction at the middle school level
  • Leadership qualities to inspire, motivate and develop students
  • A reflective practitioner, committed to a continuous process of self-improvement and lifelong learning
  • Enthusiasm, a positive sense of humor, self-confidence, and effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to lead or direct extracurricular activity or coach interscholastic sport if desired

Physical Conditions

Candidates must be able to manage the following conditions:

  • Classroom environment
  • Mobility around school buildings and on different floors (handicap accessible)
  • Repetitive motion (use of a keyboard)
  • Periodic need to move light furniture, hang visuals in classroom, carry objects (no more than 40 pounds), etc.
  • A non-smoking campus
